Innovations in Supporting the First Year Student Experience

Innovations in Supporting the First Year Student Experience - 11 May 2006 - University of Edinburgh

This free conference is part of the Academy's Innovations programme and recognises the importance of the first year experience for the integration of students into, and eventual success in, higher education.

It represents the first opportunity to share the findings of two Academy-funded national projects on this subject and will also examine how the first year experience can be enhanced in a disciplinary context through enquiry based learning. Finally there will be an opportunity to share institutional practice in workshops.

It will be of interest to Senior Managers, Programme Leaders and Student Support Managers.

Deadline for registration is 27 April 2006 but early booking is advised.

Academic Practice: emerging meanings and research directions

The SRHE will be holding an event on Tuesday 28th February, 2006, from 10.30am – 1.00pm in London entitled Academic Practice: emerging meanings and research directions.

The meeting will be convened by Professor Bruce Macfarlane (Thames Valley University) and include a panel of speakers including: Professor Paul Trowler (Lancaster University), Professor Stephen Rowland (University College London) & Professor Carolin Kreber (University of Edinburgh)

This panel discussion will explore different interpretations of the meaning of ‘academic practice’ and invite participants to discuss future research directions. The discussion may include reflection on established research areas such as academic work and culture and the scholarship of learning and teaching and themes emerging on the basis of changing roles, responsibilities and relationships in academic life. An opportunity for all those interested in research in this area to participate.

The cost of each seminar (including a sandwich lunch) is £20 for SRHE members (either individual or corporate) and £25 for non-members. All meetings will be held at the SRHE office- 76 Portland Place, London, W1B 1NT

eLit2006: Digital literacies and learning in the information

Announcing eLit2006: Digital literacies and learning in the information
society.

This is the call for papers for eLit2006 which will take place from the 28th - 30th June 2005 at Loughborough University, East Midlands, UK.

eLit2006 is the 5th international conference examining the challenge of eLiteracy. The conference is for all those interested in eLiteracy issues, including information literacy, IT training and the challenges of supporting the wide range of literacies which underpin online education. It will draw together: Librarians and Information specialists, IT service providers, IT trainers, Learning advisors, Learning technologists, Staff developers, Educational researchers, Teachers and many others.

This year's keynote speakers are:
  • Hilda Kruger (Lecturer in Socio-Informatics, Centre for Knowledge Dynamics and Decision-making, University of Stellenbosch)
  • Mark Stiles (Head of Learning Development and Innovation, Staffordshire University)
  • John Traxler (Director of the Applied Innovative Digital Technologies Research Group, School of Computing and IT, University of Wolverhampton)


The main themes of the conference are Digital literacies as a cultural tool, Literacies for the Information Society, Pedagogy for an e-literate world and Synergies for empowerment.
